The industrial sector is non-existent in Kamonyi District due to lack of electricity. However, a few processing units of agricultural products are in place with an aim of increasing the value of certain products such as pineapple and other fruits that represent a considerable economic potential for the District.
The art and craft industry is usually practiced at the level of associations or individuals. The major artisanal activities are masonry, shoe making, carpentry, pottery, brick making, joinery, decoration, hair dressing, weaving, watch, radio and bicycle repairing.
The low capacity of organization and management of craftsmen, lack of raw materials, insufficient incomes, a weak purchasing power, difficult in accessing foreign markets as well as not having quality products that can compete on a wider market are some of many factors which contribute to the lethargy of this sector.
The mining industry in the district is more concertrated on clay and sand pits exploited for construction purposes. However, their irrational exploitation undermines the environment. There are also colta and cassiterite deposits in the Sectors of Kayenzi, Kayumbu, Ngamba, Mugina and Rukoma. |
